Natural History MuseumThe Natural History Museum has moved to a new location in the foothills of Salt Lake City. As well as sitting within beautiful location on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to begin with, the new home of the museum is also a great display of architecture on both the interior and exterior making it a perfect spot for architectural photography.
The exterior consists of a nice mixture of copper, grey, and stone colors and has a variety of unique edges and cuts in the structure. In fact, it is hard to find a square edge to the building on both the interior and the exterior. These bends in the structure lead to a variety of interesting shadows for photos. The building is a massive structure and it is doubtful that photography students will have a problem finding a good spot for a good photo. The exhibits can provide for good photos, but it is clear that the architecture of this structure will most likely be the main focus of this location for photographers. *Permission must be obtained before using any photography equipment that occupies large amounts of space (tripods, flash). |
ArchitectureAlthough the museum has many exhibits that have good opportunities for photography, the architecture of this structure is what really stands out as something that is unique to this location. The exterior is covered in 42,000 feet of standing steam copper as well as a variety of reflective windows and a good mixture of dark concrete. In addition to these materials, the cuts and bends of the structure give the building a very modern look.
The interior follows the same trend but has less copper. The layout of the interior is very open and the overall shape of the structure can be noticed best on the upper floors. Looking upward towards the ceiling, the entirety of the buildings bends and curves, as well as interesting walkways can be noticed and photographed easily. |
NatureIn addition to its outstanding architecture, the museum is also located directly next to Red Butte Gardens. If you are looking for an area that includes a mixture of both nature photography and architectural shots this is the place to go.
EventsThe vastness of the building leads to a variety of opportunities for different types of events. The large dining area on the first floor could easily support large gatherings. There is also a large terrace on one of the upper floors that could host outdoor gatherings.
