Red Butte Garden & ArboretumRed Butte Garden is a non-profit organization with over one-hundred acres of natural gardens, walking paths, hiking trails and other beautiful nature locations. Conveniently located above the University Research Park, the garden is close to the main University of Utah campus making it easily accessible to all University of Utah photography students.
Because of the garden's beautiful nature setting, it is commonly used for a variety of events. These events include summer camps for kids, weddings, special events, art shows, and concerts as well as a variety of other programs. The garden has its own amphitheater located behind the University of Utah dorms that hosts popular artists during its outdoor concert series during the summer. Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West, it is a perfect place for a variety of photographic opportunities. If you are looking for a place that is close to the University of Utah that has nearly endless opportunities for nature photography, Red Butte Gardens should be on the top of your list of places to go to take pictures. |
ArchitectureThe main focus of the garden is nature rather than architecture, however, it does have a variety of beautiful structures and statues and other man made structures throughout the garden that could be used for photography. Two of these statues are shown in the above slideshow (slide 6 , 8, and 11).
WeddingsThe garden is perfect for weddings. As well as having several beautiful gazebos and podiums, there is even a garden specifically designed for weddings called the "Elizabeth Ellis Schmidt Wedding Garden". There are also greenhouse buildings that include plants and large areas that could be used for weddings but more likely gatherings or indoor eating locations for weddings.

NatureWith acres of to explore areas and paths, the garden is a perfect place for all types of nature photography. The garden is filled with opportunities for close-ups of flowers and plants, wide-angle shots of scenery, and also shots of wildlife within the park. Even in winter the garden maintains its beauty, however, in spring when the garden is in full bloom is when it is at its best.
PortraitThe garden is a great place for portraits. It has wide open grassy areas for large group shots as well as many unique backdrops against the artistic structures located within the park. The brick, ivy, and copper backdrops shown at the end of the slideshow are great for small group photos, personal portraits, or wedding photos.
